Bogus Tuition.
Many and varied are the Astrology courses on offer to
the public, and not all are what they seem to be. Apart from bogus
courses, there seems to be a problem in the standards being used. I
suspect that the same old mistakes are being repeated as people copy
from others rather than spend time thinking about what they are about to
present. For instance; the use of the now discredited quadrant House
systems, such as Placidus; the wrong orbs; the use of unprovable and
mainly useless factors recently added to Astrology by people who should
know better but didn't check their facts.
Here
are some of the problems.
1]
An example of a course that is not really a course can
be found on the Astrocom web site and is described as Personalised
Astrology Lessons. In actual fact it is yet another of those computer
generated reports dressed up to look like tuition but which teaches very
little; there is no mention of calculating charts, for example. Clever,
but nothing to be learned here of any real value.
2]
Beware of courses dressed up to look 'academic', in
other words offered by grand-sounding organisations with a tendency to
look like a college or university. The course charges tend to be high -
in the hundreds of pounds - with lots of hidden extras, such as books
and 'examination' fees. You will end up paying for the building and the
expenses of the committee, but will you learn anything of value that you
couldn't find in the books all by yourself? More to the point, are the
books referred to of any real use?
The main enticement is to offer a Diploma and the
chance to have letters behind your name, for example John Doe FCAP, but
be advised that neither the diploma nor the appellation carry any
legal recognition whatsoever, so you could end up paying large
amounts of money for nothing.
3]
There are some organisations offering heaps of courses
on a variety of subjects - with Astrology thrown in for good measure.
The quality of these courses is highly suspect and may come from
unreliable sources.
Ask yourself:
Has the course been written from the ground up
especially to teach Astrology or is it just a collection of papers
directing you to read various sections in a book?
Is the person teaching the subject competent to do so
- and by this I mean is well grounded in the correct techniques rather
than just parroting what can be found in books?
Is there any backup by e-mail or phone in case you are
stuck and need advice, or will you be met with a wall of silence or told
to try harder?
If you need advice,
just ask. It costs nothing and I will
be pleased to offer you my opinion.
